This was shot by Cody Abbot on a park bench near the Black Warrior River. It's a simple game of 5 card draw with some pretty high stakes. Thanks to my lovely girlfriend Aspen Harris for acting, and my good friend Malcom Mcdonald for helping out as well. Enjoy.
I like the overall uniformity of the shots here. You start with a LS, than jump to a OTS on both of the players, then each a CU, then back to LS. Makes the following and viewing of this smooth and easy. Very simple and terse.
My favorite shot in all of this was when he split the cards to reveal her face. That was really creative. I also think the framing seemed really smooth in the transitioning between close ups, etc. The facial expressions were shown by the framing really well. Cute concept and executed well. Nice!
I feel like your portrait of a place worked perfectly for this assignment. The shots look well thought out and prepared, the over-the-sholder shot showing the smoking pipe was interesting in building his character along with the close-ups of his facial expressions!
The smoke coming from the pipe really worked well against the backdrop, and the focus really made sure the viewer got to see that detail. The card split shot that revealed her face was really great, as were the shots of the guy winking. It helped tell the story without overacting. The CU of the card deck were sharp and interesting. I loved the varied angles!
I felt kind of bad after we got done shooting because I forgot to shoot some of the rack focuses that you wanted, but it still turned out really well I think. You did a good job of putting it all together.

ReplyDeleteThis was probably the most interesting video to watch, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed that smugness that guy had throughout the video, and all of the close ups helped intensify that.
great closeups, especially of the shuffling and the pipe. good nat sound as well.
